VW Plan Hits Four German Plants
Management’s proposal would leave Emden, Zwickau, Hannover and Audi Neckarsulm without vehicle production between 2031 and 2034 by sending successor models elsewhere. The supervisory board will discuss the unconfirmed plan on September 3–4, setting up a fight over whether model allocation can let VW avoid the two-thirds approval normally required to relocate production.

EU €3 Duty Moves Goods Inland
Small-parcel arrivals in the Netherlands fell 46% after the EU introduced its new customs charge, but demand for Chinese goods has not gone away. Higher cargo tonnage at Liège and bigger consignments point to platforms bringing products in bulk, then distributing them from EU warehouses, leaving national product-safety authorities with more of the enforcement burden.

EU Power Shifts, Veto Reform Stalls
Paris and Berlin have found the workable part of EU foreign-policy reform: give Kaja Kallas more Commission tools, but place her more clearly under Ursula von der Leyen. The harder question is the veto. Eleven countries want governments to stop blocking decisions so easily, yet that change still needs the consent of those protected by the veto itself.

Italy’s 4.18% Yield Looks Contained
Italy’s borrowing costs are rising, but markets are not treating Rome as the next debt-crisis candidate. The BTP-Bund spread is still near 84 basis points while yields climb globally; the real pressure is refinancing, as weak growth and a huge debt stock force Italy to replace cheap old bonds with costlier new ones while the ECB has little reason to step in.

Romania’s EU Funds Bet Awaits Brussels
Romania says it can absorb over 90% of its EU recovery grants, but Brussels still has to approve billions. The country has received about €13 billion from its €20.1 billion plan, while wage reform failures and coal delays already leave at least €870 million exposed.
