VW axes €1.5 billion Bosch software alliance

Thousands of human interfaces wait for an autonomous brain that has yet to arrive.

US and Chinese competitors are pulling ahead in live deployment. IEA data cited by AFP shows that American and Chinese robotaxi fleets together more than doubled in 2025 to around 8,000 vehicles across over two dozen cities (The Straits Times). Europe has nothing comparable. Mercedes holds a limited approval for hands-free highway driving in Germany. Czechia opened its legal framework to equivalent vehicles from January 2026 (Kinstellar). These are selective permits, not mass deployment.
VW remains in the race, but with a different mix of partners. It runs a Berlin software campus with around 1,000 employees building the AI driving system for its upcoming ID. The Bosch exit means VW is replacing one route to autonomy with a portfolio of outside dependencies.
The pattern matters more than the partnership. The competitive frontier in cars is shifting toward software iteration speed and real-world driving data. A robotaxi company like Baidu's Apollo Go learns from every awkward junction its fleet encounters across Chinese cities (EqualOcean). A traditional carmaker learns from smaller test fleets, structured validation programmes and committee decisions. The feedback loop is slower by design, and that gap compounds.
The test for VW is concrete. If a new partner is signed by September and working features reach cars customers can buy, the Bosch split will look like a painful but rational correction. If it becomes another reset followed by another reset, the reading hardens: Europe builds great cars, but the brain inside them is increasingly designed somewhere else.
