Italy rejects all 12 asylum transfers
Rome’s blanket refusal exposes the central weakness in Europe’s new migration rules: EU law can assign an asylum claim, but only national authorities can execute the transfer. Italy accepted 51 Swiss requests yet rejected every EU request, as deadlines approach that could automatically return responsibility to Germany and other requesting states.
DAX giants earn €52.6bn, shed 41,000 jobs
Germany’s largest listed companies are posting record operating profits through foreign earnings, cost cuts and a business mix increasingly detached from domestic factories. Auto employment has fallen to a 21-year low, investment no longer replaces worn-out equipment, and the retreat is spreading through supplier networks into Central Europe—even as some Czech and Hungarian plants secure selective gains.
Rhine freight hits €215 as pumps empty
A third of Alsace petrol stations are short of at least one fuel grade as record-low Rhine flows cripple barge capacity. Ships are loading at a fraction of normal levels, while rail and road cannot replace the missing volume. The river remains open, but moving fuel and industrial cargo now costs multiples of June rates.
Hungary races to unlock €10 billion
Budapest says milestones are complete for roughly half its recovery-fund projects, but no formal payment request has reached Brussels. With 91% of Hungary’s allocation still unpaid, the government must finish implementation by 31 August and prove that 27 rule-of-law safeguards meet the Commission’s test before the frozen grants and loans can flow.
