Macron and Merz seek EU market bans
A Franco-German proposal would let the Commission act against foreign practices that distort competition across whole sectors, potentially excluding firms from the EU market. The trigger and limits remain unwritten. Ahead of EU-China talks on 8–9 October, European businesses face a trade-off: protection from subsidised rivals could also mean higher costs for buyers and retaliation.

Denmark’s population register: 8.8 million affected
Unauthorised searches through a licensed company’s access affected an estimated 8.8 million people in Denmark’s population register. Officials have cut off the company and opened an investigation, but they still do not know how many searches returned names or addresses, or whether records were copied. Those findings will shape decisions on direct warnings and possible new identity numbers.

G7’s 100 million barrels leave diesel unclear
European buyers still cannot tell how much fresh diesel the G7’s reserve release will provide. The pledge may include barrels already promised in March, and leaders have published no diesel volume or country shares. A Dutch tender shows another delay: bids close on 8 October, but loading runs through November. An implementation report is due within 20 days of the pledge.

France’s 4.93% bond yield squeezes its budget
France is still finding buyers for its debt, but borrowing is getting more expensive. The yield on a bond auctioned on 1 October rose from 4.23% to 4.93% in a month. Higher rates will feed into the interest bill gradually as old debt is replaced, adding pressure to a 2027 budget already proposing spending cuts.

Ship sinks near Romania; cause unconfirmed
Two people died when a cargo ship caught fire and sank off Romania’s Black Sea coast on Monday. Ukraine says Russian drones struck the vessel, but Romania has confirmed only the fire, sinking and rescue. The wreck lies outside Romanian territorial waters, leaving the cause unresolved as ships in the region already face higher war-risk insurance costs.

Greek tanker strike report meets a tracking gap
Greek outlets say the LNG carrier Maran Gas Mystras was struck near Hormuz on 5 October, but British maritime warnings name no ship and a public tracker last placed it near Singapore. The operator has not confirmed the vessel’s position or condition. Europe’s gas losses are already concrete: QatarEnergy’s delivery halt leaves Italy’s Edison without 35 cargoes.

Romania’s fourth premier pick needs rival votes
Luca Niculescu has ten days to seek Parliament’s confidence, and his path to 233 votes runs through two parties that refuse to govern together. The Social Democrats and liberals could still support the same cabinet without sharing ministries. Neither has pledged its votes, leaving the proposed government and the 15 November budget deadline in the balance.

France can borrow, but at a price
Investors are charging France more to fund its debt as a contested 2027 budget weighs on its bonds. The pressure appears to have added to Monday’s euro slide, though the currency was already falling and the dollar was firm. France sold its full €11.999 billion bond offering on 1 October, but paid 4.93% on a ten-year bond that yielded 4.23% a month earlier.

Hungary releases letters, keeps Ukraine veto
Budapest has reportedly stopped blocking letters that let Ukraine and Moldova prepare for the next stage of EU membership talks. Formal talks still need Hungary’s consent, which it has tied to a Ukrainian bill protecting Hungarian-language schools. The bill remained in committee on 5 October, leaving both candidates waiting for a parliamentary vote and Hungary’s next decision.

Saudi pact orders forces readied
Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan have ordered preparations for a rapid deployment of allied forces to the kingdom after Houthi attacks. Their 5 October decision turns an August defence pledge into military planning, but names no units, troop numbers or timetable. Any deployment still depends on national law, and the pact gives Turkey’s NATO allies no duty to join.
