Member states still decide who can actually activate force or interference. Euronews captured the limit: the EU can help coordination, but drone security remains mainly national.

France is moving in a similar direction. A French Senate text would allow vital operators, or their contractors, to use anti-drone equipment against imminent threats near protected sites. Germany is holding a tighter line. The Bundesnetzagentur treats jammers as generally unlawful interference.

Europe is making different choices between speed and control. Belgium and France are testing delegated site defence. Germany is staying closer to a state-centred model. The more drones appear near airports, ports, military facilities and energy sites, the harder that patchwork becomes to justify.

The Risk Left Open

The case for Belgium’s move is straightforward: drones move faster than ministries. A site operator may be the only actor close enough to act in time.

The risk is equally practical. A jammer can disrupt emergency communications, aviation systems or lawful radio services. A disabled drone may also crash outside the fence, moving the danger from the protected site to the public around it.

The real test will be in the details Belgium has not fully settled in public: who qualifies, whether operators need prior instruction or only notice, how activations are logged, who reviews them, and who pays if lawful jamming causes damage. Belgium is offering Europe a model for faster last-mile defence. It is also showing how easily drone security can run ahead of the legal wiring built to control it.
