This is now part of the allied playbook: pre-attack intelligence is used to warn civilians, put pressure on Moscow, and frame the story before the strike happens.

The detection chain also shows a European dependence that has not been fixed. US space-based infrared sensors can spot ballistic launches within seconds. Europe has no satellite system that does the same job. France, the UK and Poland contribute imagery and signals intelligence, but the first warning of launch still runs through American systems.

Nuclear Deterrence by Default

If interception does not work, deterrence moves back to the nuclear level. France’s "dissuasion avancée", or extended nuclear deterrence, announced in March 2026, formally covers eight countries, including Germany, Poland, the UK and Sweden. The Gdansk Accord with Poland in April 2026 gave that pledge a hard edge: a nuclear strike on Warsaw could trigger French retaliation.

Both previous Oreshnik strikes came when Moscow was under diplomatic pressure. This warning follows Trump’s three-day ceasefire and its collapse. The missile is not just a battlefield weapon; it is a coercive signal, fired when Russia wants to reset the psychological terms of negotiation.

Ukrainian intelligence estimated in April 2026 that Russia had 3-10 Oreshnik missiles, with production increasing. With New START, the US-Russia nuclear arms treaty, expired and no successor in place, there is no mechanism to verify whether Oreshnik warheads are conventional or nuclear. France’s nuclear umbrella is the declared answer. The harder question is whether Paris would accept a strike on French soil to defend Warsaw.
