Danish sovereignty stays, US access expands
The open-ended pact preserves Danish sovereignty but gives Washington room to expand Pituffik and establish defence areas at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig. It also brings the US into sensitive investment screening and anticipates Greenland remaining aligned after possible independence. No troops, budgets or construction dates are set, and both Danish and Greenlandic parliaments must approve the deal.

EU trades two oligarchs for three-year sanctions
Ambassadors struck a deal to reduce recurring veto threats by extending a key Russia sanctions list from six months to three years. In return, Mikhail Fridman and Alisher Usmanov would be removed, potentially releasing assets from EU-wide freezes. The bargain still needs formal Council approval and publication, leaving only a seven-day stopgap legally in force.

EU fuel costs jump 23.8%
Germany plans a €2.5 billion fuel-tax cut from October, while France is targeting payments at up to 5.5 million commuters. The competing responses expose what Europe’s inflation rankings obscure: pump prices reflect government choices as well as oil costs, and broad relief may subsidise wealthier drivers, foreign motorists and retailer margins.

Sub-5nm transistors reach four-inch wafers
Carnegie Mellon researchers have combined atom-thin MoS₂ channels with the photolithography used by chip factories, preserving switching at dimensions where silicon struggles. The peer-reviewed demonstration produced an on/off current ratio above one million, but it stops short of working circuits or manufacturing readiness: yield, variation and contact resistance remain decisive hurdles.

Wunstorf drone may predate Leipzig attack
Investigators are testing whether drone wreckage found near Germany’s Wunstorf airlift base matches the explosive device that struck a Ukrainian freighter in Leipzig. Suspicious material was reportedly found nearby, but the drone may have lain in the moor for two years—a timeline that could weaken claims of a shared sabotage operation.
