Romania’s F-16s hold fire as drone crashes
A drone crossed into Romania from Ukraine for about four minutes on 24 September before falling near Solca, with no casualties or damage. The defence minister says it carried explosives and that any shot had to protect people on the ground. The ministry has yet to publish the flight timeline needed to tell whether the pilots had a safe chance to fire.

France will guard Yanbu’s oil terminal
Macron says France will send soldiers, radars and air defences to protect the Saudi port that lets oil tankers bypass the Strait of Hormuz. The European Commission wants governments to lift sanctions blocking €4.2 billion in regional funds and new grants to foundation-run universities. Hungary has strengthened its anti-corruption rules and joined the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, but the university trusts at the centre of the case have yet to be wound down. Governments must decide whether those changes are enough by 23 October.

France wins Usmanov’s EU sanctions exit
Banks across most of the EU no longer have to freeze Alisher Usmanov’s assets after France pressed for his removal from a sanctions list renewed through 2029. Azerbaijan pardoned a jailed Frenchman the next day, but neither government has confirmed a link. France has offered no detailed public explanation for the exception, prompting Estonia to demand answers.
