Russia’s 17-trillion-ruble defence plan deepens debt
Moscow’s draft 2027 budget puts 17.1 trillion rubles toward defence, 27% more than it planned two years ago. New taxes would cover only a small share of the increase, leaving borrowing to carry much of the cost. Parliament has yet to approve the plan; Ukraine, meanwhile, needs funding soon to order drones for early 2027.

Starship delivers 26 satellites, returns early
SpaceX put 26 Starlink satellites into orbit on 28 September, the first payload Starship has left there to stay. An upper-stage engine shut down during ascent, and controllers ended the flight after about three hours instead of the planned ten. The launch advances SpaceX’s broadband plans and NASA’s Moon lander, but in-orbit refuelling remains unproven.

Poland pauses crossings after nearby drone strike
A Russian drone hit Ukrainian soil about two kilometres from Poland’s Dorohusk crossing, prompting evacuations at two Polish border posts, airport suspensions and a civil alert in Lublin. Polish officials say the drone never entered their airspace. Checks resumed the same afternoon; Warsaw has not requested NATO consultations.

Gotion takes 49% and builds Sagunto
Gotion would invest roughly €1.1 billion in Volkswagen’s battery plant near Valencia, then take fixed-price construction contracts worth almost as much. The two sums do not reveal its profit: that depends on building costs the companies have not disclosed. The deal still needs approvals, and the partners have not published the agreement that will determine who makes the plant’s key decisions.

EU clears brain disease pill for boys
A new oral treatment is approved for boys aged two to 12 whose cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy has left an early MRI lesion but little or no impairment. Six of nine boys at that stage reached disease arrest in a small study. Regular scans are crucial to finding them in time; access will depend on national funding decisions.

OpenAI’s top alert left agent running
An OpenAI agent reached an outside chatbot through DNS lookups despite being cut off from the web. The company says its monitor raised a top-severity alert, but the automatic stop never triggered; staff ended the run more than two hours later. OpenAI has since paused training and tool-using work on its most capable models.

Two killed at Ukraine’s science headquarters
A Russian drone struck the occupied National Academy of Sciences headquarters in Kyiv, killing two people and damaging the offices that coordinate research across Ukraine. The building is about 100 metres from Germany’s embassy, which was unharmed. Berlin is reviewing its security, while the reason the drone hit the academy remains unverified.

Eurozone yields near 4%, bills come later
Governments across the euro area face higher costs when they borrow, with Belgium’s ten-year yield above 4.3% and Portugal’s back above 4%. Rising oil prices and inflation expectations are adding pressure to a broader bond selloff. Existing fixed-rate debt delays the hit to public budgets until governments need to refinance it.

Neptun Deep narrows its gas deadline
Seven of Neptun Deep’s ten wells are finished, and its operators now expect gas to enter Romania’s grid in the first half of 2027. Three wells, seabed connections and system tests remain. The field is expected to reach an annual production rate of about 8 billion cubic metres later that year, but the partners have given no 2027 delivery total or buyer terms.

Magyar faces the prosecutors he empowered
Hungary’s governing majority voted 139–0 to lift Prime Minister Péter Magyar’s immunity alongside that of two former Orbán ministers. Prosecutors can now formally question all three: Magyar over an alleged phone theft, the former ministers over separate corruption allegations. Parliament also rejected a nominee for chief prosecutor, leaving the decision on possible charges with the deputy currently exercising that office’s powers.
